But how co...I would love to not think of religion. But how could we allow ourselves to be so reckless? Our entire country, not just Florida, is far from the point of permitting us that luxury. And as a nation, we are not ‘growing out’ of religion. I used to think that Christianity would sort of get diluted with each generation of young people, but that is not the trend I am seeing. I teach Genetics lab at USF and each semester at least 50% of these Biology and Biomedical Science majors proclaim allegiance to some sort of faith. In our Biology graduate program, out of only 35 individuals pursuing PhD and Masters degrees, there are at least THREE individuals that I know to believe in a YOUNG EARTH. Religion trains you to abandon reason. And in some individuals, even rigorous training in a field that DEMANDS reason and critical thinking does not reverse that toxic way of thinking. Does it not send a chill down your spine to think that these are the future leaders of your community? Does it not bother you that we live in a country that would never knowingly elect an atheist as president?

Honestly, I would love not to think of this stuff. Ceratophyllum, perhaps you could tell me your secret that allows you to escape all these disconcerting thoughts.Rachel Rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12507172701305175183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1190675214283776057.post-62852025022969540092011-04-23T11:34:50.121-07:002011-04-23T11:34:50.121-07:00I wish I could agree with you. However here in Florida where the radical religious make laws to discriminate against those of us who do not believe, pointing out the errors and contradictions in their holy book is one of the tools we have to beat them back. I do dream of a day when Christianity is taught as a part of history alongside the Roman pantheon of Gods and choosing to think about it is an option, but in this state and many others I am barred from marriage, birth certificate rights, Hospital visitations and so on. My partner and I also suffer unfair and unequal tax liabilities and lack government protections shared by most of the population.

Here in Florida we also have many city governments that are blatantly open about their prejudices against the non-believer and receiving fair treatment in government business is questionable at best. I hope to one day be in your camp, but until these things change I will fight on wherever I can.CleverLewishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00861738898787441264noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1190675214283776057.post-57302598879592967952011-04-23T07:28:00.961-07:002011-04-23T07:28:00.961-07:00The same thing that happens every "easter&quo...The same thing that happens every "easter" morning: nothing special.

What is to be gained by analysis of garbled, prehistory nonsense? You might as well study Tolkien. At least LOTR has some worth as literature, being a deliberate creation of an individual author rather than the hardest to forget bits of poorly preserved near-eastern folklore.

I sometimes wonder about Florida atheists who spend vast amounts of time and energy discussing holy books. You're only making religion stronger by discussing it. One wonders about your (unconscious?) motivations.

Simply dismiss this junk information from your mind and think about something useful. Like bee keeping. Or solar energy.

What do I think of religion? I don't think of it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
